“Angelic Peace” was created for the INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. This was my first commercial commission. The piece is 3 X 5 feet and hangs permanently in the chapel.

The mosaic was made to honor two employees that worked on the pre-surgical floor who passed away. There are pieces of a saucer incorporated into the wing that belonged to one of the women. All the materials except for her dress are recycled materials; there are pieces of plates, cups, tiles and beach glass. The dark blue is from a bowl in honor of a friend’s son who died while it was being created. She gave me the bowl months ago to use in my mosaics and I decided to work it into the artwork. It is my hope that the angel will give comfort and peace to those that visit the hospital chapel.

The dedication was held on May 21, 2009. My mother came from Topeka, Kansas, along with my husband, Doug and my friend Barb Carr who knew the hospital employee that gave me the commission.

If you are local and want to see the mosaic go to the back of the hospital by the emergency room entrance. The chapel is the half round building and enter through the hall just inside the waiting room.

The Ace of Spades, Fleur de Lis Tray, and Angelic Peace mosaics are large format, stand out pieces, with personal themes.

Ace of Spades

This 20 in. X 30 in. black and white ace of spades is a fun addition to your home. It is 15 pounds but quite easy to hang. The black tiles are from a retro mosaic table I found on the streets of New York. The white area is made from broken white plates. Around the edge is an off white wood molding. It has one small fleur-de-lis from a plate in the lower left corner. Just a little whimsy to honor my family in new Orleans.

Fleur de Lis Tray

The fleur de lis teak tray was a wedding gift for my cousin’s daughter and her husband for their wedding in New Orleans. The tray is 20 inches long and 15 inches wide. It is gray and black with dark brown grout. The tray was a flea market find. The frame is raised with open spaces creating the handles. This was my first time to work in such small detail. I also got a commission from one of the wedding guests and created the mirrored fleur de lis pictured in my portfolio gallery.

Picture Frame

The photo is of my friend Erin and me at the wedding in New Orleans. We are wearing our Venetian masks each guest received after parading through the Quarter lead by a brass band! I added a coin made the year she was born. The colors are red and brown with brown grout to match her room.
